Yesterday, our morning started with this email from one of our Assitant Principals:
"Staff,
We may have some tardiness this morning due to a train and a buffalo. Please excuse your students…."
What??!
According to the news, eight buffalo got away from Hub City Livestock Auction. One of them paid a visit to Melgaard Park, one to Simmons Elementary, and one to Eisenhower Circle. Apparently the trucker left the gate open at about 7 o'clock in the morning. The buffalo caused quite a bit of excitement as people were going to work and parents were taking their children to school. By 4:30 in the afternoon, all had been corralled and all the law enforcement officials were back to their regularly scheduled duties.
While this may be the middle of the prairie,
this is the 3rd largest city in our state...
only in South Dakota!

Run Buffalo Run! Too bad they didn't all get away to roam happily on the prairie once again. :)
I think they knew where they were headed!!
I love this...just like we are the only state that would have an alligator on the softball field! So funny.
What a great reason to be late for school!
Wow, only a handful of people can say they saw a buffalo on their way to work (excepting the average cowboy in the 1800's). What fun for morning commuters -- and a fun story to share with everyone else!
That is too funny! We had some cows get loose near our house when I lived in the city with my parents. I remember we were getting ready to go on our senior trip and we saw them walking through the school parking lot. I lived about 2 miles from the school and when we went by our house on the bus they were in a park across the street from my house. Lots of excitement for Salamanca :0)

How funny! We get buses late all the time, but never with such an interesting excuse.
