This picture of my daddy was taken in 1941. He served our country during WWII. He was a member of the 164th Infantry Division of the United States Army.
We usually have school on Veterans' Day. The community Veterans' Day program is held in our high school arena. The veterans and their families are seated on the main floor. Students fill the bleachers and the balcony. My first assembly was 14 years ago today...and I remember it so well. I was looking forward to going, as I knew Amy would be there with the high school student body, and I also wanted to hear the All-City Chorus perform. Our youngest daughter, Emily, was a member of this elementary auditioned singing group. They always sing the Star Spangled Banner and other patriotic selections. Senator Tom Daschle was home and the keynote speaker that year. But what I remember the most was when Central High School's band played the Armed Forces Salute and all the veterans stood when their song was played. Some wearing their uniforms, standing so proud and so erect...
It brought me right back to the memories of standing with my mom and my family at my dad's funeral 10 years before. The uniformed veterans took the flag from my dad's casket and so carefully folded it and handed it to my mom while a lone trumpet played Taps...And all my mom could say was "Your daddy was so proud." Here I sat, 10 years later, with tears streaming down my face... remembering my dad...
This year, our Veterans Day assembly will be tomorrow, on Monday. And this year our tribute takes on another very special meaning for our family, as our son-in-law is currently serving our country as a pilot in the United States Air Force. We paid tribute to all the men and women, and their families, who sacrifice so much for our country.

Wow, how cool to have such an assembly...I am jealous! What I loved about New Zealand was that each town, however small, had memorials for WWI and WWII heroes with names all all.
Here in CA we have a 3 day weekend. I will spend it doing report cards.

I try to never miss an opportunity to thank a veteran or a soldier currently serving, so please give pass along my heartfelt thanks to your son in law. My own father was a Marine and I understand the missing and the pride you feel.
